Methylaminolevulinate (MAL) is a porphyrin precursor approved for the treatment of actinic keratoses (AKs) of the face and scalp. The approved protocol combines topical application of MAL to individual lesions under occlusion for 3 hours followed by 37 J/cm2 of red light.1 This procedure is difficult to perform when AKs are numerous, ill defined, and widespread. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) performed with MAL without occlusion and with an incubation time of 90 minutes in patients with multiple AKs of the face.
