摘要

The prevalence of type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) in the United States continues to increase and, in fact, poses a greater threat than ever to the nation's health and economy. It is the fifth leading cause of death and a major contributor to disability. In the United States alone, there are 23.6 million people with diabetes, 90%-95% of whom have DM2 (NIDDK, 2007). The total cost of diabetes in the United States is estimated at $174 billion, which is 2.3 times greater than the population without the disease (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease [NIDDK], 2007). Diabetes is an independent risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD); 68% of adults with diabetes die of heart .disease or stroke, and 75% have high blood pressure (NIDDK, 2007).
