Life is a dream. My uncle intones this proverb many times throughout the course of a day. He sings it with the lilt of a Yiddish psalmist. "Life is a hulem [dream]. Some have a good dream and some not so good." As he sits in the sun-bathed kitchen of his son's home, the conversation always returns to this well-worn phrase. When words escape him or memories cannot be retrieved, he repeats, "Life is a hulem," with emphasis and some sadness.
