摘要

This case report describes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a cyst-like periradicu/ar lesion in an alpaca. Radicular cysts are widely reported in the human literature and have been reported in dogs, horses, and sheep. Radicular cysts have a squamous epithelial lining and develop adjacent to the tooth roots. Developmental and inflammatory etiologies have been proposed. Currently, they are thought to be reactive lesions associated with inflammatory oral disease in humans. The exact mechanism ofcyst formation is poorly understood. It is postulated that pulpal inflammation of the associated tooth occurs secondary to bacterial endotoxin production within the pulp cavity. The resulting periapical inflammation activates the epithelial cell rests of Malassez in the periodontal ligament that have been shown to express cytokines and HSP27 when stimulated by inflammation.
