Frequency of Mowing and Plant Growth Regulators to Suppress Common Bermudagrass

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate plant growth regulators (PGRs) and mowing frequency for suppression of vegetative growth and seedhead development of common bermuda-grass [Cynodondactylon (L.) Pers.]. Imazethapyr {2-[4,5-dihydro-4-meth-ic acid} appfied at 0.06 kg ha~(-1) in each of two applications suppressed vegetative growth for five weeks when compared with untreated check. Turf treated with imazethapyr required two mowings during the next two weeks during 1990 and one mowing duringthe same period during 1991. Imazethapyr at 0.03 kg ha~(-1) applied in each of two applications plus one mowing at six weeks effectively suppressed common bermudagrass seedheads for seven weeks. Imazethapyr reduced turf quality within three weeks aftertreatment but the turf recovered by five weeks with no stand loss. Mefluidide {N-[2,3-di-methyl-5-[[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]amino]phenyl]acetamide} applied at 0.6 kg ha~(-1) in each of two applications plus 2 to 3 mowings resulted in acceptable seedhead suppression of common bermudagrass while turf mowed three times without mefluidide did not Neither flurprimi-dol { α-( 1 -methylethyl)-α-[4-(trifluoromethoxy )phenyl]-5-pyrimidine-methanol) (one application at 1.1 kg ha~(-1) or two applications at 0.8 kg ha~(-1)) nor paclobutrazol { ( ± )-(R~*R~*)β-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-α-( 1 , l-dimethylethyl)-lH-l,2,4-triazole-l-ethanol} (1.1 kg ha~(-1) applied in one or two applications) suppressed seedheads of common bermudagrass and 3 to 4 timely mowingswere required to maintain a high quality turf during seven-week period after PGR treatment. Imaze-thapyr suppressed vegetative growth and seedheads of common ber-mudagrass more than mefluidide, flurprimidol, flurprimidol plus me-fluidide, and paclobutrazol. Turf treated with imazethapyr required two less mowings than other PGRs to maintain a high quality turf during the seven-week period following treatments.
