fessor Vandermeer has a longstanding interest in biodiversity conservation and begun work in Costa Rica. On moving into agro-ecology he was looking for an area in which he could study coffee in an agro-ecological environment but found too much deforestation had already taken place in Costa Rica. In contrast, he found that coffee farmers in the Chiapas region in Mexico has just the kind of agro-ecological approach to growing coffee he wanted to study and struck up a relationship with Finca Irlanda and owner Walter Peters. He and his colleagues have now been visiting Mr Peters' farm for 17 years.
