摘要

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to abdominal cramping and bloody diarrhea. The population of IBD patients grows every year worldwide (Molodecky et al, 2012).The exact trigger for the onset of the disease is still unclear but there is a well-established link between the gut bacteria and inflammation. IBD patients have both on phylogenetic as on functional level an unbalanced gut microbiota (Frank et al, 2007;Sokol et al, 2006). Therefore, manipulation of this unbalanced microbial community is an attractive therapeutic strategy. Butyrate is one of the metabolites produced by human gut microbes during carbohydrate fermentation. It has well-described beneficial effects in IBD, but the delivery into the gut is problematic. Administration of butyrate-producing bacteria that are able to colonize the gut is therefore a possible solution for the delivery problem (Van Immerseel et al, 2010).
