Traders form a particularly important part of the Swiss "coffee cluster," and a survey of some of the best known coffee traders in Switzerland suggests that they believe prices could rise rapidly next year. Elsewhere in the Swiss coffee market, figures suggest that domestic consumption, which dipped in 2004, recovered last year, and recent research suggests that long-established coffee culture in Switzerland is changing. At the time of writing prices were hovering around the US1.00 mark, but severaltraders questioned by C&Cl say they believe that worldwide consumption continues to be under-estimated, and that continued growth in parts of the world for which it is difficult to obtain accurate figures - such as Central America and the Middle East - will continue to drive increases in consumption, and hence support prices.

7. Commodity prices have risen sharply since 2006. This may benefit developing countries specialized on primary exports, but poverty may increase. Uruguay is a net exporter of primary products and a net importer of oil. With the aim of analyzing the impact of soaring commodity prices and policy options, we apply a CGE model and microsimulations. A rise in food prices has a positive impact on the Uruguayan economy that is partially offset by the increase in oil prices. Even when poorest households’ income rises, their welfare falls because their consumption basket becomes more expensive. Poverty falls but extreme poverty increases.
