Dr Nic Barcza is happy to report that INFACON X was both an outstanding technical success and has resulted in a financial surplus that will be allocated to ongoing research in the area of ferroalloys. This achievement was largely due to the support from the ferroalloy industry and the hard work of the members of the congress committees and the secretariat from the SAIMM and Mintek. The International Ferroalloys Congress (INFACON) has been held every three years since 1974, apart from one occasion. The first INFACON, INFACON 74, as the name implies, was held in 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was sponsored by the Ferroalloy Producers' Association of South Africa (FAPA), the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM - Mintek as it is known today) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The last INFACON event held in South Africa was INFACON 6 in March 1992 in Cape Town. Dr Robbie Robinson, past president of the SAIMM, was the chairman of the organising committee of INFACON 74 and INFACON X.
