In his foreword to the 1996 Mintek Annual Review, Mintek President, Aidan Edwards, says that there is strong potential for Mintek to grow since the minerals industry is growing both locally and abroad; and that the State clearly regards Mintek's work as of the utmost importance, and is strongly committed to downstream operations in the minerals sector, 'The good news is that the 1990s have witnessed a resurgence in transforming South African raw materials into value-added products', he says. 'Already under way are macro operations, such as Columbus Stainless, Iscor's expansion programme for the production of both steel and stainless steel, Alusaf's expanded operations at Richards Bay, the Namakwa Sands titanium-slag operations on the Cape west coast, (which utilize Mintek's plasma-arc technology), a chromium chemical facility in Natal, and a number of ferro-alloy operations. Further plans are afoot to establish a major zinc smelter, further ferro-alloy facilities, and a titaniumsmelting operation in South Africa, together with major programmes in neighbouring states'.
