摘要

The mortality of Cylas formicarius, Euscepes postfasciatus and Omphisa anastomosalis infesting sweet potatoes and thermal damage in or on sweet potatoes, caused by vapour heat treatment, was determined. All species were treated by forcing air at 48鳦 saturated with water vapour (>94% RH) into sweet potato tubers. After the temperature of the innermost part of sweet potatoes reached 47鳦, complete mortality of C. formicarius, E. postfasciatus or O. anastomosalis was achieved following treatment for150, 60, and 90 minutes, respectively. However, a single temperature treatment of 47鳦 for 150 minutes promoted rotting in sweet potatoes in storage 2 weeks after treatment. Rotting was suppressed by incremental changes in air temperature from 31 to 41鳦for 240 minutes with saturated water vapour prior to the single temperature treatment of 47鳦 for 150 minutes. However, surviving C. formicarius pupae were detected in sweet potatoes subjected to an incremental temperature treatment and a single temperature treatment of 47鳦 for 150 minutes. It was concluded that the incremental temperature treatment might adversely affect mortality following a single temperature treatment. When the holding time for the single temperature treatment was increased to 190minutes (plus a single temperature treatment of 47鳦 for 190 minutes) 59 and 154 C. formicarius pupae were killed. There was no injury to sweet potato for an incremental temperature treatment plus a single temperature treatment of 47鳦 for 190 minutes.
