Genotypic features of the nitrate absorption kinetics of maize and winter wheat seedlings.

The effect of increasing concentrations of nitrates on nitrate absorption kinetics was investigated in 3 genotypes of maize (Kubanskii 206, Moldavskii 270 and R811) and 3 of winter wheat (Mironovskaya 808, Inna and Wakefield) under hydroponic conditions. Nitrate content of roots and shoots was also evaluated. Treatment of 9-day-old seedlings with 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mM NO3- caused an increase in Km and a lowering of Vmax in all genotypes. Vmax was negatively and Km positively correlated with seedling nitrate content. The cultivars differed in absolute values for the kinetic parameters of absorption, the degree of their reaction to increased nitrate concentration in the medium, and in the amount of nitrate accumulated in roots and shoots. The greatest variation amongst genotypes was observed for Vmax and shoot nitrate concentration. Varietal differences increased with increased nitrate concentration of the medium. The use of the parameters Vmax and Km in evaluating the effectiveness of nitrate absorption in plants is discussed.
