The development of hybrid embryos from the cross Panicum miliaceum X P. coloratum is highly variable for size and rate. Endosperm degeneration and the inability of embryos to differentiate result in death of hybrid seeds under natural conditions. This paper shows that these problems can be easily overcome by excising immature hybrid embryos 8-10 days after pollination and culturing them in vitro. It was observed that in interspecific hybrid plants flower bracts failed to open at anthesis. As a result, cross pollination was impossible. However, the problem was partially overcome by treating flowers with NAA and gibberellic acid solutions. In most cases interspecific hybrids showed virtually total pollen sterility (98-100%), although 3 lines with upto 10-15% pollen fertility were isolated.
