We are reprinting this classic Quarterly article from 1985 to honor the pioneering efforts of William and Helga Olkowski and Sheila Daar in developing IPM methods for plants indoors. Non - toxic management methods for common pests of greenhouse plantsare well developed, and a number of these approaches can be effectively adapted for use on houseplants. The strategies we recommend spring from published descriptions of integrated pest management (IPM) for greenhouse pests, and from our personal experiences with design and implementation of such a program for the extensive collection of orchids and other plants cultivated and displayed by the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. The Conservatory's success with IPM may be credited to the leadership of its director, and the motivation, innovation, and perseverance of its staff as they removed toxic materials from the workplace and patiently fine-tuned the new methods of pest management.
