Life does not always make sense. Many people are driven by irrational fears that have little basis in reality. One of these is fear of insects or entomophobia. Though insects and arachnids can sometimes cause pain and suffering, most are beneficial, only a few are nuisances, fewer yet are dangerous. But fear of insects can cause someone to take risks far beyond those posed by the insect. For instance, although perimeter sprays of pesticides are often applied to kill spiders, the risk of pesticide exposure may be greater, than the risk of a serious spider bite (Langley 2008; Bronstein et al. 2010). Statistics about risks are available from a number of sources. One of these is the American Association of National Poison Control Centers (AAPCC). Thereare 60 centers covering about 300 million people. Information is also available from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and from numerous websites dealing with specialty information. These statistics have been gathered and are presented in Table 1.
