Trials under controlled conditions were conducted on Paris daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens) cv. Yellow Star to determine the effect of duration of leaf wetness and temperature on disease severity and incubation period of Uredo sp., the causal agentof rust. Duration of leaf wetness and temperature both had significant effects on rust development, evaluated by counting the number of uredospores per plant. The optimal temperature for infection is around 15℃: at such a temperature, 6 h leaf wetness are sufficient to cause severe infection. The incubation period for Uredo sp. was 11-13 days when plants were kept at 20-25℃, 15-16 days at 15-18℃ and 19-20 days when plants were maintained at an average temperature of 10℃. When plants were maintainedat an average temperature of > 25℃, rust did not develop: symptoms were not visible even 30 days after artificial inoculation. In plants kept at an average temperature of 3-4℃, the incubation period was 30 days. On the basis of the data obtained in thepresent study, indications for the adoption of proper cultural practices are provided.
