Combat Aircraft received an exclusive invitation to take part in a mountain flying exercise conducted at Alpnach, Switzerland by aircrew of the German Army's MTH 25. ALPNACH TOWER, good morning GAM [German Army] 801, single CH-53 POB 9 ready to start up'. With these words, Capt Drummer, the deployment commander, informs Alpnach Tower of another forthcoming mission in the nearby Swiss Alps. The German Heeresflieger (Army Aviation) has conducted regular mountain-flying training in Switzerland since 2003, generally with a two-week course taking place between October and May each year. The German CH-53G aircrew carry out challenging high-altitude framing flights out of one of the busiest helicopter bases in Switzerland - Alpnach. The airfield is also home to the Swiss Air Force heavy-lift helicopter fleet of Super Pumas and Cougars, plus EC635s. When Combat Aircraft visited Alpnach, the German training component consisted of one CH-53G and, for the first time, a single Bo105.
