The problem of absence of cultural methods available for control of the spread of viruses, especially cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), is reported from Campania, Italy, and the ban on development of transgenic material is discussed. A drop in production of San Marzano tomato caused by virus diseases in Campania is considered, especially CMV, tomato mosaic virus (TMV), tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and, to a less extent in Campania and in the open ground, tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), transmitted by Bemisia tabaci, which instead causes significant losses in protected crops in Sicily and Sardinia. It is stated that CMV is transmitted by aphids and TSWV by the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis. It is stated that a 20% drop in production makes the industry economically non-viable. The problem of appearance corky root disease caused by Pyrenochaeta lycopersici alongside with CMV in the absence of resistant cultivars and hybrids is also considered. Valuable support granted by DOP (Denomination of Protected Prigin) certificate to typical San Marzano tomato and regional programmes in Campania allowed an increase in production, although still failing to surpass the initial objective of 5000 t/annum.
