摘要

Rootstock selection is a critical aspect of modern orchard-management systems, clearly increasing in importance as the tree density increases. To assist with this selection, the NC-140 Multi-State Research Committee (involving scientists from the United States, Canada, and Mexico) has been evaluating standard rootstocks and new introductions for more than 30 years. Initial studies focused on East Mailing, Michigan, Budagovsky, and Polish rootstocks (NC-140, 1991; 1996), and the current NC-140 trialsfocus on Cornell-Geneva rootstocks (from the Cornell-Geneva Apple Rootstock Breeding Program, Cornell University and USDA cooperating) (Johnson et al., 2001) and Pillnitz rootstocks (from the Institut für Obstforschung Dresden-Pülnitz) (Fischer, 2001). An earlier report on the first 6 years of this trial was printed in the August 2006 issue of Compact Fruit Tree.
