2015 Progress Report -Fruiting Wall Production Systems for Apricots, Nectarines, and Plums

2015 was Year 1 of this four-year project (2015-2018) to develop and evaluate two complementary orchard technologies, fruiting wall production systems for stone fruits and high tunnel protective covering structures. The project builds on extensive previous IFTA research in sweet cherries and was established in 2011-2014 with other funding sources. Now that the research plots are in full production, the goal is to examine their potential for improving Midwest growers' ability to sustainably produceand market high value specialty stone fruit crops like apricots, nectarines, and hybrid plums. The canopy architectures include Tall Spindle Axe (TSA), Palmette (PLM), Upright Fruiting Offshoots (UFO), and Super Slender Axe (SSA). The UFO and SSA canopies were imposed on all three fruit species, while the TSA was imposed on nectarines and the PLM was imposed on apricots and plums. A wide variety of stone fruit cultivars are being tested for each species grown in each canopy architecture treatment, bothwith and without Haygrove high tunnels covered with light-diffusing Luminance polyethylene.
