For decades, scientific research has focused on fighting "bad" bacteria in the body, primarily through the use of antibiotics. But although antibiotics are often quite effective in this endeavor, they are not without problems. For example, they are not selective in the kinds of bacteria they affect; "good" bacteria are affected along with the bad. Bad bacteria are also evolving into "superbugs" and developing resistance to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. In addition, the medications themselvescan also cause numerous adverse side effects.
