摘要

Money is something quite extraordinary, fungible for anything, economists tell us. In this sense it is of another world because in the biophysical realm money has no equivalent. Perhaps we have known this for a very long time, but in the discussions of “ideas [that] have consequences” (Orr 2009), it was the 1920s writings of Frederick Soddy, a chemist, not an economist, that foreshadowed the rolling episodes of unpleasant consequences visited upon modern economies (Daly 1996). The most recent just arrived: the present global financial meltdown.
