A novel Hoffman-like tri-dimensional coordination polymer {Fe(dpe)[Pt(CN) _4]}.0.5(dpe) based on the organic pillar ligand 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (dpe; trans isomer), which exhibits spin crossover and porous properties was reported. Detection of the guest molecules was performed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of the corresponding clathrate. Single crystals of {Fe(dpe)[Pt(CN) _4]}.0.5(dpe) were grown by means of a slow diffusion technique. (NH _4) _2Fe(SO _4) _2.6H _2O dissolved in water was placed in one side of a multiarm-shaped vessel. The other arms contained a solution of dpe in methanol and a solution of K _2Pt(CN) _4.3H _2O in water. Square-shaped orange crystals of {Fe(dpe)[Pt(CN) _4]}.0.5(dpe) suitable for single crystal X-ray analysis were obtained after three weeks. Finger-print like magnetic response pattern to each analyte was attained.
