The UK Prime Minister's science advisory committee has advocated confidence in the consensus on the scientific evidence covering genetically modified crops, which concludes that when properly controlled, GM products are as safe as their conventional counterparts. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Council for Science and Technology (CST), which advises him on science and technology policy issues, presses for the need for the right regulatory framework that would encourage continued research into solutions to current and future problems facing UK agriculture. The CST says that for certain problems specifically acute in the UK, such as the "take-all" (Gaeumannomyces graminis var tritici) disease in wheat, GM crops may be the only solution.
