Clearing the backlog of genetically modified crops waiting for EU import approval could “reinvigorate” the ongoing free-trade negotiations between the EU and the US, believes Karel De Gucht, EU Commissioner for Trade. There are now nine GM lines waiting to complete the final authorisation stage, which is a formal approval decision from the European Commission. The issue has become one of several key sticking points in the trade negotiations, which started in 2013.
