European agricultural and environmentalist groups have urged the European Commission to rethink possible changes to the approval process for importing genetically modified crops and products for food and feed use. The criticism comes after reports emerged that the Commission was planning to give EU member states the freedom to impose their own restrictions on GMO imports, in a similar way as recently allowed for cultivation approvals. The Commission is expected to make a formal announcement on its plans later this month.
