摘要

The USDA is unconvinced by the US EPA’s new plan to protect the monarch butterfly, suggesting that the proposal could lead to pesticide use restrictions that would harm farmers and do little to improve habitat for the species. In comments sent to the EPA, the chief of the USDA’s Office of Pest Management Policy voices concern that the proposal is premature and incomplete. “We believe that an inclusive dialogue is needed before implementation to ensure that serious unintended consequences do not follow from a well-intentioned effort,” according to Sheryl Kunickis, director of the USDA office. “Even with this input, EPA will need to ensure that its monarch restoration efforts are consistent with best management practices for management of herbicide-resistant and invasive weed populations.”
