Political leaders in Washington say the US should continue to look into a possible expansion of nuclear energy, but they are also wary of an escalation of the crisis in Japan that could further sour public opinion against atomic power. In his State of the Union address to Congress in January, President Barack Obama said he would support the inclusion of nuclear power as part of a Clean Electricity Standard (CES), aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases from power plants.
