Former Kazmunaigas (KMG) boss Bolat Akchulakov was on Friday appointed deputy minister of oil and gas in Kazakhstan, replacing Lyazzat Kiinov — the man who has taken over his old job at the state-controlled company. Kazakh-based sources say the 40-year-old Akchulakov is seen as a rising star and still has a bright future despite his acrimonious departure from KMG in December after just two-and-ahalf months at the helm. Akchulakov lost his job because of violent unrest in the southwestern city of Zhanaozen involving workers dismissed from a local unit of KMG. Timur Kulibayev, the former head of the Samruk- Kazyna sovereign wealth fund that controls KMG — and chairman of the KMG board — also had to step down (IOD Dec.23’11).
