In a class-action lawsuit that has received little publicity, the Milberg LLP law firm, with offices in New York City and Los Angeles, charges that ConAgra markets its Wesson brand cooking oils as "natural" even though they are made from genetically engineered corn, soybeans and canola. Filed June 28 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, in Los Angeles, the 28-page complaint (Robert Briseno et al v. ConAgra Foods, Inc.) cites a definition of genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) by Monsanto, a leading biotech seed company. Monsanto is quoted as saying that GEOs are "plants or animals that have had their genetic makeup altered to exhibit traits that are not naturally theirs" (emphasis added). The complaint also quotes a GEO definition posted on the UN World Health Organization website: "Organisms in which the genetic material(DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally."
