JFE Steel's tie-up with JSW Steel gives it a stepping-stone into India, one of the world's fastest-growing steel markets, when long-term demand at home in Japan is looking increasingly bleak. And for the Indian company, the strategic collaboration with Japan's second-biggest steelmaker could provide access to technology, expertise and capital for expansion. Japan's major steel-consuming industries such as its household appliance and auto manufacturers are increasingly shifting production to cheaper production bases, such as India, where auto consumption is booming.
