Approximately 18,000 central line associated bloodstream infections (CLA-BSIs) occur each year in intensive care unit (ICU) patients in the United States (1). A somewhat smaller number of bloodstream infections may result from arterial catheters (2, 3). These infections result in substantial morbidity and are very expensive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the average attributable per patient cost of a CLA-BSI, adjusted to the 2007 U.S. dollar, ranges from dollar7,288 to dollar29,156 (4). Per-encevich et al (5) related a mean excess length of stay of 12 days at a cost of dollar18,432 (2005 U.S. dollar) attributable to each CLA-BSI. The magnitude of these estimated costs have not lot been lost on policymakers.
