Freeport—Yara and BASF have begun construction on a new 750,000-t/y world-scale ammonia plant at BASF's existing site in Free-port, Texas (PCN, 23 Feb 2015, p 4). Owned 68% by Yara and 32% by BASF, the $600-mil-lion unit will utilize a hydrogen-based process that will reduce capital expenditures and maintenance compared to a traditional natural-based ammonia plant. Completion is expected by the end of 2017.
