Fermentation Technology: A Viable Tool for Value-addition to Cotton By-products

The two major by-products of cotton are cottonseed and cotton stalks. Cottonseed is an excellent source of protein and oil. The oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and protein is rich in essential amino-acids. Cottonseed also contains hulls and linters which are having enormous industrial applications. The cotton stalks are hard woody plant biomass containing high lignin content that find applications in fibre board preparations. Though these by-products have huge potential, the explorations on various industrial applications have not yet yielded success. In this article, the possible interventions of fermentation process on value-addition in cotton by-products value chain have been elaborated. The applications in cottonseed are efficient linterand oil recovery, degossypolization and nutritive quality improvement of cottonseed protein, industrial enzymes and peptone from cottonseed meal and bio-enrichment of cottonseed hulls. The other applications using cotton stalks are production of high value compost, bio-ethanol and mushroom.
