Cotton plant represents botanical genera Gossypium Linn., comprising two cultivated allo-tetraploid species of G. hirsutum and G. barbadense (2n chromosome number of 52) and two diploid cultivated species of G herbaceum and G arboreum (2n chromosome number of 26) and several wild and a few semi-wild species of both ploidies (2n= 52 and 26). In world, presently hirsutum or the American Upland cotton is cultivated in about 93-94% area, Egyptian/Pima/barbadense cottons in about 4-5% area and the two diploid cultivated species in remaining 2% area. Total area under cotton in world is around 35million ha and has been ranging between 33.5 to 36million ha over last one decade. Output from predominantly grown G. hirsutum cottons in world and in India is roughly equal and is about 92% of total cotton production.
