Pittsburgh-headquartered US Steel is reducing production rates at two of its works instead of idling them and laying off thousands of workers.The company had announced it would temporarily shut down its integrated sheet products' mill in Granite City, Illinois, and lay off 2,080 employees because of reduced demand from the oil and gas industry. Most of Granite City steel is used to produce pipes (CRU Steel Views 26 March 2015).
