The copepod, Arctodiaptomus salinus (Daday, 1885) shows variations in body size (between 1240 and 2360 mum in the female) as well as variations in density at three stations of different salinity, labelled FE, FS, and LZ, in La Sebkha Zima, a temporary, saline lake in Morocco. The species has two generations a year at sta. FE versus a single generation at FS and LZ. The number of generations largely depends on ambient temperature and salinity. An experimental study on the influence of these factors on the growth of A. salinus demonstrates that embryonic development (De) takes from 2 to 22 days and that the time required for postembryonic development (Dp) (= Dn + Dc: naupliar development + copepoditic development) varies between 15 and 75 days, all as a function of environmental temperature and salinity. Both embryonic and postembryonic development times decrease with a rise in temperature and also with an increase in salinity at 10degreeC. At low temperatures, an increase in salinity evokes an increase in size of the various developmental stages of A. salinus, whereas the reverse is observed at higher temperatures. By contrast, the size of the developmental stages generally diminishes with a raise in temperature. This study has also shown the existence of a limited range of both temperature and salinity, in which the species apparently has little trouble surviving and thriving (as judged from longevity and survival rates) as well as an extended range in those environmental factors in which the species has more difficulty surviving and, apparently, has to resort to individual variability, i.e., relies on the survival of a few, hardy individuals, to maintain the continuity of its population.
