摘要

Typically developing children require years ofovert training and practice to learn to read with skill. Therelatively recent advent of functional neuroimagingmethods amenable to the study of children has providedinsight into the neurobiological underpinnings of skilledreading development. In this brief review, we discuss howneuroimaging during reading-related tasks has revealedthat, when adult and child skilled readers perform iden-tical reading-related tasks with comparable levels of per-formance, these groups show similar but nonidenticalpatterns of regional brain activity. Children activate someneural regions that adults do not activate (or activate less),and vice versa. The activity patterns in these regionstransition to mature levels with increased proficiency andmaturity. The dynamic nature of the reading brain as thechild matures is thought to be a demonstration of both theinherent flexibility and the increasing efficiency of brainprocessing over development.
