Studies of person perception (people's impres-sions and beliefs about others) have developed importantconcepts and methods that can be used to help improve theassessment of personality disorders. They may also inspireadvances in our knowledge of the nature and origins of theseconditions. Information collected from peers and othertypes of informants is reliable and provides a perspectivethat often differs substantially from that obtained usingquestionnaires and interviews. For some purposes, this in-formation is quite useful. Much remains to be learned aboutthe incremental validity (and potential biases) associatedwith data from various kinds of informants.
