Very potent drugs are used in anesthesiology for the management of numerous clinical settings. Although anesthesiologists daily induce general anesthesia, treat pain and dysrhythmias, we lack a broad pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic knowledge of many of the used drugs. This is especially true for patient populations at risk. The purpose of this section 'Drugs in anesthesia' is to present and discuss the recent pharmacological developments and the use of drugs in specific patient populations. There are many remaining and yet unsolved questions in anesthesia, some of them are addressed in this issue.
