Biodiversity analysis of selected cyanobacteria.

Nostoc, Anabaena and Calothrix strains were examined for the contents of pigments, carbohydrates and total soluble proteins, and for activities of enzymes related to N metabolism. The total chlorophyll content was highest in Anabaena strains, followed by Nostoc and Calothrix strains. Calothrix strains had the highest carotenoid content, followed by Anabaena and Nostoc strains. In Anabaena strains, allophycocyanin was the most abundant, followed by phycoerythrin and phycocyanin. In Nostoc and Calothrix strains, phycoerythrin was dominant, followed by allophycocyanin and phycocyanin. The carbohydrate content and total soluble protein content varied among the isolates. Marked differences in nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase [glutamate-ammonia ligase] (transferase) activities were also observed. Based on the similarity matrix, a dendrogram was constructed using SIMQUAL software. Inter/intrageneric similarity was recorded for physiological parameters when assigned equal importance, and some of the cyanobacterial isolates exhibited either no or only 6% similarity. All the clusters showed isolates from more than one genus, thus, indicating that the cyanobacterial genera cannot be differentiated based on physiological parameters alone..
