The relevance of oxygen isotope (18O) enrichment as a measure of transpiration rate and total leaf biomass of tea accessions grown under field conditions in Valparai, Tamil Nadu, India, was evaluated. Natural variation in ( Delta 18Olb) in existing tea accessions was significantly high (18.36-25.31 per mil) and showed a strong positive relationship with the harvested leaf yield (r=0.484, P0.05, n=20). The relative values of Delta 18O for the crosses (genetic cross) were higher than those recorded for either of the individual parents. This trend was also reflected in the leaf yield. This study highlights the relevance of 18O enrichment approach for screening tea accessions for both higher transpiration rate and leaf yields..
