to the editor: The study on the use of selenium in mild Graves' orbitopathy has significant implications for clinicians who manage this disease in countries in which the soil content of selenium is low, such as New Zealand.1 Although we applaud the research team and their contribution, we wish to caution readers that administering selenium to patients who already have adequate serum selenium levels may not be entirely safe. In a literature review on selenium and ocular health, we noted both basic science and human studies suggesting that selenium supplementation is linked to an increased incidence of glaucoma.
