Adipose tissue metabolism and functions of the immune system are intertwined. This is, among others, illustrated by the fact that adipocytes can secrete a large number of factors that are also produced by immune cells. Moreover, various types of immune cells reside in adipose tissue and their number is increased in obesity. There is also increasing evidence of close interactions between adipose metabolism and the innate immune system, as is illustrated by the presence of complement factors in adipose tissue. The complement system is part of the innate immune system and can be activated via the classical, lectin and alternative pathway. These three pathways can be activated in response to invasion of bacteria and viruses or to presence of immune complexes but they may also be activated by tissue damage and apoptotic cells. Complement factors in adipose tissue can be derived from adipocytes as well as from immune cells inside the fat tissue.
