It is well established that retinoic acid is a potent regulator of a wide variety of developmental processes especially with respect to foetal development [1]. Retinoic acid is also involved in modulating the growth of neoplastic cells [2]. Retinoic acid is a metabolite of vitamin A (retinol), which was shown to be converted to the aldehyde form, retinal, then oxidized to retinoic acid in vivo [3]. It is now well recognised that the main primary cell differentiation-modulating metabolite is all trars-retinoic acid. This metabolite is thought to be involved in the expression of genes in the early development of differentiated cells and can induce a variety of genes in stem cells, which are associated with embryo development [4]. As would be expected, cancer cells are also modulated by retinoic acid in that it allows cells to revert to a more differentiated form rather than continue in a proliferative state.
