By definition vitamins cannot be synthesized in adequateamounts and must be obtained from dietary sources. Yetvitamin D, in the form of D3, is readily produced byhumans exposed to ultraviolet B irradiation [1]. In ourdistant history, well before humans were covered withclothing or sunscreen and before solar radiation wasblocked by pollution, we synthesized substantialamounts of endogenous vitamin D3. Indeed the levelsof vitaminD3 in preindustralized societies are many-foldhigher than those of average, current-day Americans [2].Today, most of us receive little direct exposure to sunlight.Living in cold climates as well as concern aboutskin cancer and accelerated skin aging prompt us tocover exposed skin. Vitamin D has now truly becomea vitamin in that it almost always must be obtained fromdietary sources [3].
