Few farmers will be looking forward to a bumper harvest in the UK this year - but global wheat and maize production is set to break all previous records. So where does that leave the outlook for grain prices in the months ahead? According to Jack Watts, senior analyst at the HGCA, recent UK weather has been quite favourable for wheat and barley yield prospects. "But there are a lot of bare patches in fields, which will bring the overall average down." At best, production could match last year's 13.3m tonnes, but in reality it is likely to be worse than that.
