Before ordering spring seed, take a close look at your local markets and the current prices being offered. The first marketing choice that a grower makes is deciding on the crop and variety before sowing. With the effective removal of intervention support and import protection within the EU, growers now face much stronger price signals from the world market than they ever used to in the past In countries used to operating at worlda market levels, notably Australia and Argentina, growers respond rapidly to changes in the relative price of different commodities by altering their cropping patterns. The crucial step in this process, and the one often overlooked by farmers in the EU, is to lock in to the favourable forward prices that encouraged them tosow the crop in the first place. Growing a crop in the hope of finding a market come harvest time is no longer a rational strategy. Effort must therefore be put in to securing market outlets now, before spring cropping choices are made.
