Apre-emptive approach to crop nutrition and the use of growth promoters could help growers make significant savings, according to two exhibitors -- Glenside Fertility and Farming systems and Omex Agriculture. Glenside use the Albrecht Soil Survey, which provides a detailed analysis of cation exchange capabilities, nutrient status, pH and base saturation, organic matter levels, and micro-biological activity. In demonstrating the technique at their plot on the Cereals event, the survey came up with asurprising result as Nander Robertson explained: "The soil had a very high calcium index, but was low in soil microbial activity and iron." By treating half their trial plots with a liquid seaweed product called Maerit -- a root growth promoter -- and adding an iron supplement, visitors could see a marked difference in plant health. "Many agronomists might have interpreted the symptoms as manganese deficiency," Mr Robertston suggests, "but in fact lack of iron was the problem. You can see the difference. The untreated barley has already started to senesce". The soil survey costs about 100 pound per field (up to 50 acres), and often the results don't lead to sales of Mr Robertson's own products. "70 to 80 percent of what we recommend we don't actuallysell," he said. Pre-emptive action is behind Omex's new product, Vitomex: "It's a plant nutrient designed to enhance a crop's internal defences, particularly against the mildews, botrytis, phytophthora and pythium," said sales manager Ian Elliot. "We believe if you can get the plant vigorous and healthy, then you can cut down on pesticides." Although the product has been used mostly on vegetable crops such as lettuces, onions, carrots and brassicas, it has also been applied to peas and beans, and the company is investigating cereals too. "We are looking to develop Vitomex on cereals, particularly hybrids," says Mr Elliot. "We believe they need to be treated differently." The company claim their product is considerably cheaper than fungicides, but stress it is a nutrient not a pesticide. Apart from the obvious advantages of cost savings, Mr Elliot believes, Vitomex benefits the farmer by reducing the problems of harvest intervals, MRLs and LERAPs associated with many products.
