Gout fly, disease and lodging did all they could to knock Masstock's AgriFocus trials this season. But to no avail, as Sarah Henly and several hundred growers found out when they visited one of the Smartfarming events last month. Don't make agronomic decisions on the rebound. Choose your drilling date and input programme based on several seasons, Masstock's technical manager Clare Bend told visitors to the AgriFocus 2002 event near Marlborough in Wiltshire. "It's tempting to adjust your policy onceyou know how the current crop has performed. But decisions based on the previous year's experiences aren't always the most appropriate. We've had unusually high gout fly infestations this year, and a couple of strange septoria years, which could confusethe picture," she warned. Last year's late drilling followed by a cold spring and dry June saw the disease at a 15-year low, so some growers may have cut back on fungicide this season, particularly after the dry spell in April. Mrs Bend fears they may be unpleasantly surprised at harvest in disease susceptible situations.
